The Maldives experienced a remarkable boost in tourism this January, with over 200,000 visitors arriving, marking an 11.1% increase compared to the same period last year. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the destination is showing a strong recovery, underscoring the tourism sector’s growth post-pandemic.

China continued to be the top source market for international visitors, with 31,388 tourists arriving in the Maldives by January 29. Following China, Russia ranked second with 20,902 tourists, while Italy secured the third position with 19,042 visitors. The United Kingdom placed fourth with 17,714 tourists.

A significant portion of the visitors, 69.7% (134,714 tourists), chose to stay in luxury resorts, highlighting the continued popularity of upscale accommodations. Meanwhile, 25.5% (50,864 tourists) opted for guesthouses, reflecting the growing diversity of options available to travelers.

The Maldives tourism sector continues to flourish, with 177 resorts, 793 guesthouses, 154 safari vessels, and 15 hotels currently operating across the archipelago. The increase in tourist arrivals is seen as a positive sign of the sector’s resilience and its crucial role in driving the country’s economy.

The steady rise in tourist numbers points to a continued recovery for the Maldives, as the nation reaffirms its position as a top travel destination in the region. With such growth, the outlook for the coming months remains optimistic, promising further growth for the tourism industry.
