Statistics from the Ministry of Tourism reveal a notable increase in tourist arrivals to the Maldives following a seasonal downturn earlier this year.
After a decline in visitor numbers during the first quarter of 2024, recent data indicates a steady rise in arrivals. February saw daily tourist arrivals peak at 7,400, but by April, this figure had dropped to 5,600. The total number of arrivals also fell from 217,392 in February to 168,366 in April, with a continued decrease through June, which recorded 123,284 arrivals.
However, the trend has reversed in July, with arrivals rising to 167,528 and continuing to increase, currently standing at 126,343 for this month.
Here’s a breakdown of tourist arrivals over the past five months:
-March: 194,227
- April: 168,366
- May: 119,875
- June: 123,284
- July: 167,528
According to the Ministry, these figures represent a 13 percent increase compared to the same period last year. To date, the Maldives has welcomed 1.3 million tourists this year, up from 1.1 million during the same period in 2023.
Additionally, this year has marked a significant milestone with the highest number of tourists arriving from China since the COVID-19 pandemic, signaling a strong rebound in international travel to the Maldives.
