First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed delivered a powerful address at the opening of the 7th International Teachers' Conference today, emphasizing the critical importance of equitable education in the 21st century.
The conference, themed "Educate, Empower, Elevate: Equitable Education for 21st Century Education Excellence," brought together educators, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the nation.
In her speech, the First Lady underscored the necessity of inclusive education that reaches every child, regardless of their background. "Ensuring equity and inclusion in education has been the light that illuminates our path," she stated, referencing the Maldives' historical commitment to these principles.
Key initiatives aimed at improving teacher wellbeing were highlighted, including measures to cap in-school working hours and reduce administrative tasks. These efforts are designed to enable educators to focus more on teaching. The First Lady also emphasized the importance of ongoing professional development, including workshops, refresher programs, and mental health support for teachers.
Addressing the challenges faced by the Maldivian education system, particularly in island communities, she called for collaborative and innovative solutions. She stressed the role of technology in overcoming geographical barriers and enhancing access to educational resources.
Special recognition was given to teachers in island communities for their vital roles as educators and community leaders.
Prior to her speech, the First Lady was presented with a commemorative plaque by Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, marking the significance of the conference in the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to create an inclusive and equitable education system.
