President Dr Mohammed Muizzu has announced September 5, 2024, as a public holiday to celebrate National Day. This year, National Day falls on September 4, marking the first day of the Islamic month of Rabi-ul-Awwal.
National Day commemorates the Maldives’ liberation from Portuguese rule. The pivotal event occurred on the 1st of Rabi-ul-Awwal in 981 A.D., when Sultan-ul-Ghazi Mohammed Thakurufaanul Auzzam, commonly known as 'Bodu Thakurufaanu,' successfully freed the country from Portuguese domination.
The observance of National Day was first instituted by Summuvul Ameer Muhammad Amin Dhoshimeyna Kilegefaanu on 1 Rabi-ul-Awwal 1365 in the Islamic calendar. It has since become a significant annual event in the Maldives.
In celebration of National Day, various flag-hoisting ceremonies will take place across the country. Additionally, the President will address the nation, reflecting on the historical significance of the day and the nation's heritage.
