Maldives Meteorological Department Issues Warning as Southwest Monsoon Intensifies

The Maldives Meteorological Department (MMD) has issued a weather advisory urging the public to exercise caution due to the intensified southwest monsoon, which has brought heavy rainfall and rough seas across various regions of the country. The weather alert, issued on Monday, highlights the potential risks of high tide during the full moon period.
The department warned that with the expected high tide, there is an increased risk of flooding, particularly in coastal areas. The MMD has advised residents to take precautionary measures, such as placing sandbags around properties to protect homes and buildings from potential water damage.
The advisory also cautioned against travel during this period due to rough seas. The northern and central atolls are expected to experience very rough seas, while the southern atolls will see generally rough and cloudy conditions. This could make sea travel hazardous, particularly for smaller vessels and fishing boats.
The warning further highlighted that wind speeds are expected to reach 13-23 km/h, with gusts of up to 45 km/h in some areas, especially during the day. The authorities have urged people to stay indoors when possible and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in the affected regions.
As the southwest monsoon continues to intensify, the Maldives is expected to experience more heavy rainfall and strong winds in the coming days. The MMD has assured that updates and alerts will continue to be issued to ensure public safety.
Local authorities have urged residents and tourists alike to remain vigilant and adhere to the safety guidelines provided in the alert.
