Biden's Double-Edged Support: US Actions Fuel Middle East Conflict

Over seven months after President Joe Biden called for a ceasefire in Gaza, the war has only escalated. Despite calls for de-escalation, Israel’s offensive continues to devastate Gaza, while the conflict spreads to Lebanon and beyond. Biden's rhetoric of peace contrasts sharply with his administration’s actions, which have enabled Israel’s ongoing military operations with continued support and weapons supplies.

The Biden administration initially pushed for a ceasefire in Gaza but soon shifted focus to supporting Israel's military campaign in Lebanon. US officials, including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, backed Israeli military operations against Hezbollah, while publicly calling for diplomacy. However, when Israel assassinated Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, the White House praised it as "a measure of justice," abandoning any notion of restraint.

Some critics, like historian Osamah Khalil, argue that the US has used ceasefire negotiations as a political tactic to avoid domestic criticism, without genuinely seeking peace. Behind the scenes, US officials have backed Israel’s actions in Lebanon, seeing it as a chance to reshape the region politically, especially by weakening Hezbollah.

The Biden administration’s consistent support for Israel—despite widespread violence—has fueled regional instability. Even after the brutal killing of over 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza, Biden's calls for a ceasefire have been seen as hollow, while US arms continue to flow into Israel. Critics argue that Biden’s actions, far from pursuing peace, are prolonging the war and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

In essence, while the US publicly calls for peace, its policies suggest it is a key driver of the ongoing violence, deepening the conflict in Gaza, Lebanon, and beyond.
