New Drainage System Near IGMH Reduces Flooding in Male’ Amid Heavy Rains

The newly installed drainage system near the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has successfully alleviated flooding in one of Male's most flood-prone areas, even as the capital city faces heavy rains and widespread flooding this morning.
According to a media official from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the drainage system began operation today, significantly reducing the level of flooding that has historically plagued the area. Previously, heavy rains would cause flooding in this region for several days, disrupting daily life.
Despite heavy rains since early morning, which have led to flooding in several areas of Male’, the section near IGMH and extending from Ameenee Magu to Thajudeen School remains clear of water. This is a marked improvement, as the area had been one of the worst affected by flooding in the past.
However, flooding continues further down the road, with areas from Hiriya School to the Social Centre still submerged. The MNDF has deployed pumps to drain excess water from various parts of the city and is working to reduce flooding in other affected areas.
Meanwhile, the Maldives Meteorological Office (MET) has issued a **White Alert** for some parts of the country, indicating the potential for hazardous conditions, while a **Yellow Alert** has been issued for others. The alert signals continued adverse weather, including heavy rains, thunderstorms, strong winds, and rough seas, expected to last for the next 24 hours.
With the new drainage system now operational, residents of Male’ are hopeful that it will bring long-term relief to the city’s recurring flooding problems, especially during the rainy season. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge the public to remain cautious as the weather conditions persist.
