The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into the recent alteration of bank card limits by a major government-owned bank, labelling it an attempt at a "financial gimmick." The probe follows claims that the bank's decision, which was made on Sunday, could have caused significant disruption for many Maldivians.
In a statement released by the police, it was noted that politicians held a press conference to discuss the government’s finances just before the bank’s decision was announced. This timing was described as potentially causing "emergency notice" to the public and violating standard government consultation procedures.
The police are also examining the role of social media, where hundreds of bot accounts were reportedly used to incite public unrest and challenge government authority. The use of these accounts is under scrutiny as part of the broader investigation into the events.
At a Progressive National Congress (PNC) meeting, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam addressed the situation, condemning the bank's decision as a "financial gimmick." Shiyam emphasized that many Maldivians, including students and small business owners, rely heavily on bank cards for their financial transactions. He further argued that the bank's actions, taken against the government, signify a clear attempt at a coup and indicate the involvement of coup participants.
The investigation continues as the government seeks to address and resolve the fallout from these contentious developments.
