The Maldives Police Service has arrested two women for protesting against Israel's actions in Palestine, alleging that their demonstrations violated legal norms and disrupted diplomatic operations.
The arrested individuals, Aishath Shadhiya, 47, and Dr. Shazra Ibrahim, were taken into custody at approximately 1:00 PM on Wednesday. Shadhiya is the spouse of Islamic scholar Dr. Mohamed Iyaz, while Dr. Ibrahim is a known advocate for Palestinian rights. They were protesting at the gates of the Saudi and UK embassies in Male’ in response to perceived atrocities committed by Israel against Palestinians.
The police stated that the arrests followed a court order and were due to the women's involvement in violating the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act. According to the police, the protesters used loud and abusive language, which they claim obstructed the functioning of the diplomatic missions and constituted harassment of a particular ambassador. The police also mentioned that repeated warnings had been issued to the protesters before their arrest.
The detentions have sparked a wave of public criticism. Many social media users have expressed their concerns and called for the release of the arrested activists, accusing the police of suppressing peaceful advocacy for Palestinian rights.
In response to the backlash, the police have defended their actions, emphasizing the legal basis for their intervention and the need to maintain order at diplomatic sites.
