The Government Oversight Committee of the Parliament has begun reviewing the recent changes made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to his cabinet in September. This marks the first reshuffle of the President’s cabinet since he assumed office on November 17, 2023.
On September 30, President Muizzu replaced Finance Minister Dr. Mohamed Shafeeq with former Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, appointed Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, the then-Health Minister, as the new Foreign Minister, and elevated Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, the former Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy, to the role of Health Minister.
The new appointments were submitted to Parliament for approval the same day, but the legislative assembly had been in recess. With Parliament reopening on Monday, the letter seeking approval for the reshuffle was read and forwarded to the Government Oversight Committee for review.
This reshuffle comes amid growing concerns over the Maldives' financial stability, as international financial institutions have urged the government to take urgent steps to address the rising risk of default on external debt obligations.
As the Government Oversight Committee reviews the changes, political and economic observers are keenly watching how these shifts in leadership will impact the government's ability to address these mounting challenges.
