President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has launched a pointed critique of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), attributing significant damage to the country’s economy and religious values to their governance. Speaking at a Progressive National Congress (PNC) meeting last night, President Muizzu asserted that the MDP’s actions will soon be scrutinized in academic and public forums.
The President indicated that his remarks were not directed at the current administration's performance but rather at the legacy of the previous MDP government. He claimed that the MDP administration had caused unprecedented harm to the nation’s economic and religious fabric. According to President Muizzu, these issues would be studied extensively in the future through lectures, books, and exhibitions.
Reflecting on his own role, President Muizzu emphasized that his governance is guided by “God’s grace” and described the current administration’s policy as “sincere and honest.” He highlighted the significant economic challenges inherited from the previous government, noting that national debt had surged beyond MVR 120 billion by the end of the MDP's term.
President Muizzu also reiterated allegations that the previous administration's handling of the COVID-19 crisis had exacerbated the economic downturn, with claims of corruption and mismanagement contributing to the country’s financial woes. He noted that these concerns are echoed by people from various sectors within the current government.
The President’s remarks underscore the ongoing political and economic debates in the Maldives as his administration works to address the challenges left by previous governance.
