President Muizzu Links Local Food Production to National Independence

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that achieving self-sufficiency through agriculture is an important step towards strengthening the country’s independence.

In a social media post shared to mark Farmers’ Day, the President said the occasion serves as a reminder of the valuable role played by hardworking Maldivian farmers in ensuring national food security and strengthening the country’s economic resilience.

The President highlighted the importance of increasing domestic food production to protect the Maldives from fluctuations in global food prices and disruptions to transportation and shipping. He also noted that expanding the agricultural sector would help retain foreign currency within the country and create new employment opportunities across the islands.

President Muizzu said the government aims to facilitate the local cultivation and marketing of selected agricultural products in quantities sufficient to meet the country’s needs, reducing reliance on imports.

He added that a key commitment of his administration is to continue creating opportunities for farmers to increase their productivity and profitability through the use of modern technology.

The President also extended his Farmers’ Day greetings and best wishes to farmers, their families, and everyone working in the agricultural sector.
