Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources and Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam has sharply criticized the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for its role in the country's economic troubles. Speaking at a meeting at the ruling party's main office today, Shiyam asserted that there is no merit in taking advice from those whose policies he believes have led to the nation's financial downfall.
Shiyam highlighted a significant budgetary concern, stating that the MDP administration had overseen a double-digit budget deficit during its tenure. This fiscal mismanagement, according to Shiyam, undermines the credibility of the MDP's advice and poses risks to the country’s economic stability.
Addressing recent MDP criticisms that the current government has ignored their guidance, Shiyam recounted his own warnings to the previous administration against excessive money printing, which he claimed was ignored in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. He further criticized the misuse of funds designated for essential services, alleging that expenditures were made in violation of World Bank directives and recommendations.
In response to the challenging economic climate, Shiyam revealed that the current government is implementing a series of reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy. Upcoming changes include adjustments to the Aasandha health scheme, the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), and various subsidies.
Shiyam's comments reflect ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition, as both sides debate the best path forward for the Maldives amid economic difficulties.
