Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has defended President Mohamed Muizzu's decision to revoke fishing permissions, emphasizing that the President values stakeholder consultations. Shiyam’s comments come in response to a report by the online newspaper *Dhauru*, which claimed that the President made the decision without proper dialogue with relevant stakeholders.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Shiyam refuted the article’s allegations, asserting that President Muizzu consults with stakeholders whenever necessary. Shiyam explained that the recent revocation of lake fishing permissions was based on feedback from various concerned parties, including the Bodu Kanneli Fisherman’s Union (BKMU).
The decision followed a meeting at the President’s Office where President Muizzu, accompanied by Minister Shiyam, engaged with BKMU representatives. The discussion highlighted significant challenges faced by the fishing industry, such as low profit margins, outdated facilities, and difficulties in obtaining necessary cleanliness documentation for fishing boats.
During the meeting, BKMU members raised several issues and requests, including:
- Fixing a Floor Price: The union requested that the government establish a floor price for fish to ensure fair pricing and market stability.
- Provision of Special Fishing Boats: BKMU called for government support in providing specialized fishing boats to enhance the industry’s efficiency.
- Protection of Fishing Areas: There was a request for measures to safeguard key fishing areas to sustain the industry.
Shiyam reiterated that the President’s decision was informed by these discussions and aimed at addressing the industry’s pressing issues. The consultation with stakeholders reflects a commitment to resolving the challenges faced by the fishing sector and ensuring that decisions are made with the best interests of the industry in mind.
