The United Nations has reported that Gaza now has the highest number of child amputees per capita in the world, a consequence of more than a year of conflict in the Palestinian enclave. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the situation as "appalling and apocalyptic," emphasizing the devastating toll the war has taken on children, many of whom have lost limbs and undergone surgeries without anesthesia.
Guterres also warned that the conditions faced by Palestinians in Gaza may constitute the "gravest international crimes," citing widespread malnutrition, imminent famine, and the collapse of the healthcare system. He called for urgent international action to address the crisis, while criticizing the severe restrictions on aid delivery, which have left Gaza with only a fraction of the aid it received before the conflict.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reported that the number of aid trucks entering Gaza has drastically decreased, with only 65 trucks allowed per day in the past month compared to the pre-war average of 500.
Guterres condemned the blockade on aid, framing it as a "crisis of political will" rather than a logistical issue. He stressed that the responsibility of maintaining vital services in Gaza would fall on Israel if UNRWA is forced to cease operations.
