The Maldives Police have confirmed that their investigation into the death of Zakiyya Moosa, a 50-year-old woman from N. Holhudhoo, has not uncovered any evidence of foul play. Zakiyya was found dead in her home on September 10 with deep neck wounds, and a knife was discovered beside her body.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Chief Inspector of Police Mohamed Samih, head of the Death and Homicide Investigation Unit, stated that a forensic pathologist had determined that Zakiyya died from the wounds to her neck. However, he emphasized that there was no indication that the injuries were inflicted by another person.
Zakiyya’s body was found in the storeroom of her home, "New Life," with several deep knife wounds on both sides of her neck, and a shallower wound in the center. Despite the nature of her injuries, Samih confirmed that the investigation had not revealed any evidence of homicide. He further clarified that the police had consulted with international experts and that the investigation remains open.
The police's findings, however, have been met with skepticism by the local community, who have rallied in protest, demanding quicker action and justice for Zakiyya’s family. Many island residents have expressed disbelief that she could have inflicted such injuries on herself, considering the violent nature of the wounds. A rally on November 25, 2024, called on the police to expedite the investigation and provide closure to Zakiyya’s grieving family.
Zakiyya’s body was transported to the capital, Male’, for forensic analysis before being returned to Holhudhoo for burial. The police explained that an autopsy was not necessary since the cause of death was already determined by the forensic pathologist.
