The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has strongly condemned what it describes as politically motivated actions by President Muizzu's administration, accusing the government of using state institutions to intimidate and suppress opposition members.

In a statement, the MDP highlighted a late-night raid by the Maldives Police Service at the residence of MDP National Council Member Moosa Ali Mank (Mookey) as a recent example of harassment. The search, conducted at around 2:00 AM on Friday while Mank’s family was sleeping, has raised alarm over alleged government overreach.

The party also pointed to a series of actions it claims demonstrate a systematic campaign against opposition figures. These include:

  1. Investigations into former officials of the previous administration, including ex-President Solih and Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, regarding financial settlements.
  2. Travel bans on former State Minister Akram Kamaludeen and ex-Fenaka Corporation Managing Director Ahmed Saeed Mohamed.
  3. Police summons issued to MDP member Hussain Shafiu for a social media post.
  4. Threats of action against Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail for remarks made at an MDP rally.

The MDP criticized recent amendments to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Act, which it claims have undermined the ACC's independence by giving President Muizzu unchecked authority to appoint its leadership. This change, the MDP alleges, has turned the ACC into a political tool to target opponents.

The party also accused the government of selectively pursuing corruption investigations while ignoring serious allegations involving current officials. Among these are claims of misuse of state funds by the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) and irregularities in land sales by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), which the MDP says implicate senior government figures.

The MDP called on the government to halt its alleged persecution of opposition members and respect democratic principles, transparency, and accountability. It also urged the international community to monitor the situation closely and support efforts to safeguard democracy in the Maldives.

The government has not yet responded to these allegations.
