Investigation Underway into Alleged Corruption Among Customs Officers

Malé, Maldives — The police have launched an investigation into serious allegations involving employees of the Maldives Customs Service, including accusations of money laundering, embezzlement, and bribery. The investigation, which began on August 19 of last year, is focused on approximately 20 customs officers allegedly involved in these criminal activities.

Although the police have not disclosed specific details about the ongoing investigation, reports suggest that the officers may have taken bribes totaling up to 400 million rufiyaa. Allegations indicate that these officers profited through duties such as duty evasion and other services provided by Customs.

As of now, the Customs Office has not issued any statements or shared further information regarding the matter. The investigation continues, with authorities working to uncover the full extent of the alleged corruption.
