Health Minister Abdulla Khaleel announced that the Maldives is moving towards a digital health system, which will allow citizens to receive SMS notifications regarding their health status. This initiative was discussed during a recent state media program, following President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's address at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing the importance of digitization.

Minister Khaleel pointed out the challenges faced in establishing and maintaining accurate health records for citizens due to the absence of a consolidated platform. He noted that patients often have to repeat medical tests when transferring between facilities, resulting in delays in care and increased costs for the state.

One significant barrier to effective healthcare, according to the Minister, is the high turnover of medical professionals in the Maldives, with many leaving after just a year. He emphasized that establishing a digital health system could be transformative, allowing both public and private healthcare providers to maintain comprehensive medical records.

Under the new system, patients will receive SMS alerts regarding their test results, ensuring timely access to necessary treatments. “Even if a patient visits a private clinic, once the test results are entered into the system, they will receive an alert on their phone,” Minister Khaleel explained. “This will enable them to prepare for treatment as soon as possible.”

Additionally, the digital system will facilitate online appointments and consultations, providing greater convenience for the public. The Minister also addressed medication shortages on some islands, stating that digitalization could enhance logistics through drone services for medication delivery.

Khaleel stressed that similar systems have been successfully implemented in other countries and highlighted the potential benefits for Maldivians once the digital health framework is fully established. He envisions a future where individuals’ medical records will be accessible from birth onward within this integrated system.
