Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has called on the public to actively engage in discussions regarding the government's five-year master plan to control tobacco use. The minister made the request during a panel discussion titled 'Dafara', organized by the Health Ministry and TV Maldives.

The primary aim of the panel discussion was to gather public feedback on the draft master plan for tobacco control. Minister Nazim explained that the development of this master plan is being supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO), with a team from the organization already in the country to assist with its preparation. While acknowledging the support from WHO, the minister emphasized the importance of local participation in shaping the plan, as the initiative is ultimately for the benefit of the Maldivian people. The overarching goal, he said, is to ensure sustainable and long-term control of tobacco use in the country.

In addition to the master plan, the government has introduced a quitline, a dedicated helpline for those wishing to quit tobacco. The service, available at the number 1676, offers round-the-clock support for individuals seeking assistance in overcoming tobacco dependence.
