Former Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer has issued a stern critique of the current administration, alleging that its policies have significantly worsened the country's financial condition. Speaking at a press conference held at the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) office, Ameer condemned the current government for its perceived inefficiencies and failures in addressing the nation’s economic challenges.

According to Ameer, the previous MDP administration relied heavily on the Economic Committee's advice to navigate financial decisions. In stark contrast, he claimed that the current government has been slow to implement effective policies, citing excessive delays attributed to the creation and research of action plans.

Ameer highlighted several critical issues under the present administration, including the delay in necessary reforms required to address the widening financing gap. He warned that this delay could force the government to secure an additional MVR 1.8 billion, exacerbating the subsidy burden and increasing the fiscal deficit.

Further criticism from Ameer focused on the government’s failure to recover MVR 16 million in outstanding dues from state entities. He urged the administration to adopt more strategic measures to tackle this issue and criticized the discrepancy between party policies and current governmental approaches.

Ameer also pointed out the lack of a coherent policy to manage the growing tax regime and called for increased consultation with relevant stakeholders to develop an effective strategy. Additionally, he expressed concerns over the government’s inability to raise funds for the budget, revealing that none of the 19 proposals intended to generate dollars have yielded any results thus far.

The former finance minister also accused the current government of operating with undue secrecy, leading to a significant lag in financial transparency. He lamented the cessation of regular financial reports, which has left the public uninformed about the true state of the nation’s finances.

The MDP, under which Ameer previously served, has been vocal in comparing the policies of past and present administrations, underscoring the current government’s perceived failures in managing the nation's economic affairs.
