The Islamic Ministry has reversed its announcement regarding the construction of fishponds near the Islamic Centre in Munnar, following significant backlash from the public. This decision came shortly after bids were opened for the project to mark the 40th anniversary of the Islamic Centre.
The initial announcement faced criticism, particularly given the ongoing discussions about budget constraints within the state. Many voiced their concerns on social media, questioning the appropriateness of such expenditures in light of the current economic challenges facing the Maldives.
In response to the uproar, Islamic Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed stated that the decision to revoke the announcement was made in consideration of the nation's economic situation. He acknowledged that while the project had merit, it was not the right time to pursue such initiatives. "In view of the economy, it is not the only occasion to do these kinds of things at the moment," he explained.
The fishpond project had initially been presented as an opportunity for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to participate in the construction and renovation efforts at the Islamic Centre. However, with the revocation, the ministry has shifted focus away from new developments to prioritize the renovation of existing facilities.
The Islamic Centre, a significant landmark in the Maldives, has served various community functions over the years, and its 40th anniversary was intended to be a celebration of its contributions to the nation. The decision to halt the fishpond construction reflects the ministry's commitment to aligning its projects with the current economic realities.
