Attorney General Ahmed Usham has stated that the recently introduced Bill on the Prohibition of Israel Passports will require some amendments before it is moved forward in the Maldives Parliament. The AG confirmed that changes would be made in accordance with decisions taken by the Cabinet and emphasized that the government would fully cooperate with Parliament to ensure the bill's progress.
The Cabinet recently approved a proposal to ban Israeli passports in the Maldives, and a special committee has been formed to oversee the matter. The committee includes several key government figures, such as Minister for Domestic Security and Finance Ali Ihsan, Foreign Minister Abdullah Khaleel, Attorney General Ahmed Usham, Economic Development Minister Mohamed Saeed, Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal, and Minister for Islamic Affairs Mohammad Shaheem Ali Sayed.
Additionally, the Cabinet has decided to appoint a special envoy to explore the Maldives' stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and prioritize the aspirations of the Palestinian people. As part of the government's broader support for Palestine, plans are also underway to organize fundraising activities in the Maldives in collaboration with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). A nationwide march under the banner of "Maldivians with Palestine" is also being planned to show solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The government has emphasized that the process of banning Israeli passports will be expedited and is expected to be fast-tracked in the upcoming parliamentary session.
