On the occasion of International Day of Clean Energy, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reiterated the Maldives' dedication to advancing renewable energy and transitioning toward sustainable energy systems. In a statement marking the day, the President emphasized the nation’s ambitious energy goals and highlighted the collective responsibility of combating climate change.

The Maldives’ Vision for Renewable Energy

President Muizzu underlined the Maldives’ efforts to develop renewable energy infrastructure, especially solar power projects, and reaffirmed the country’s target to generate 33% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028. He emphasized the importance of the Energy Act and the energy sector roadmap as critical frameworks that ensure sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy supplies.

Acknowledging the contributions of the private sector, the President commended its investments in clean energy projects, which have bolstered the nation’s energy security and economic resilience. He also expressed gratitude to international financing partners for their instrumental role in supporting renewable energy initiatives across the Maldives.

Significance for Small Island Nations

The International Day of Clean Energy is a global observance promoting clean energy adoption to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. For the Maldives—a low-lying island nation highly vulnerable to rising sea levels—the shift to renewable energy is not just an environmental priority but a critical necessity for survival.

President Muizzu stressed the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), including the Maldives, in accessing sustainable energy solutions. He called for increased international support to enable smaller economies to overcome these hurdles and accelerate clean energy adoption.

Global Impact and Leadership

As the Maldives works to meet its renewable energy goals, its efforts reflect the broader global urgency to transition toward sustainable energy systems and adhere to international agreements like the Paris Agreement. The nation’s leadership in clean energy serves as an example for other countries, showcasing how even small nations can contribute significantly to the global fight against climate change.

President Muizzu’s message reinforced the Maldives’ commitment to environmental sustainability and its role as a clean energy pioneer. Observances like the International Day of Clean Energy serve as reminders of the shared global responsibility to protect the planet, and the Maldives’ initiatives highlight the critical role of innovation, collaboration, and leadership in achieving these goals.
