President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged the Maldivian people to draw inspiration from the bravery of the nation’s heroes and martyrs who fought for the country’s independence.
In a message shared in observance of Martyrs' Day, the President emphasized that it is the national duty of all Maldivians to strive toward a brighter future by honoring the courage of those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
Martyrs' Day, observed on the 1st day of Sha'ban each year, holds great significance in the history of the Maldives. It serves as a time to remember and honor the national heroes who were martyred while defending the Islamic faith and the country’s independence. The commemoration began in 1980 (Hijri year 1400).
The day marks the martyrdom of Sultan Ali VI (Ali Rasgefaanu), who was killed during a battle with the Portuguese on the 1st of Sha'ban in the Hijri year 965.
Observing Martyrs' Day is vital in promoting national unity and preserving the nation’s heritage. It serves as an important reminder of the sacrifices made for the country and instills the significance of patriotism in future generations.
