The Maldives Immigration has initiated a series of raids targeting illegal immigrants, with the operation focused on the Male' region.
On September 12, 2024, authorities raided five locations where expatriates were housed and detained five foreign nationals living illegally in the country. This operation is part of a broader initiative to improve public safety, address concerns about overcrowded and unsafe living conditions for migrant workers and crack down on illegal business activities.
President Mohamed Muizzu has guided this effort as part of his administration's commitment to tackle illegal immigration and enhance security for citizens. The Maldives Immigration department has emphasized that these raids aim to prevent health hazards and other risks posed by these conditions. Under the Immigration Act, property owners renting out accommodations to illegal immigrants will also face legal consequences.
The ongoing search operations will continue, with a focus on identifying and penalizing individuals living or conducting business without proper visas, ensuring compliance with immigration laws and regulations.
