The Governments of Japan and the Maldives have formalized a significant agreement to bolster disaster resilience on Male Island, with the Exchange of Notes signed this morning. The ceremony, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marked a crucial step in enhancing the island’s preparedness against climate-related disasters.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Musa Zameer signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldivian government, while Mrs. Takeuchi Midori, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, signed on behalf of Japan.
Under the agreement, Japan will provide ¥20 million (approximately US$140,000) in grant assistance for the Disaster Resilience Enhancement in Male Island project. This funding will be part of Japan’s Economic and Social Development Program.
In his address, Minister Zameer emphasized the project's importance in mitigating the effects of sea level rise and other climate-related threats. He noted that the initiative aims to ensure sustainable security for future generations. Minister Zameer also recalled the critical role of the Japanese-assisted Male Sea Wall, constructed in 1990, in protecting Male Island during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Highlighting the enduring friendly relations between Japan and the Maldives, Minister Zameer expressed gratitude for Japan's continued support in the Maldives' development efforts through such initiatives.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Abdullah Mutalib, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Japanese Embassy, and representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
